Description

Barber / Cosmetologist apprentices train in a licensed salon under a licensed professional, learning the skills of cutting, styling, coloring, permanent waving or straightening hair. In addition, cosmetologists give manicures, pedicures, scalp and facial treatments; provide make-up analysis; and clean and style wigs and hairpieces. Continually changing fashion trends affect hairstyles and techniques, requiring successful professionals to stay up to date in creating a total look for contemporary men, women, and children.

The theory training in the classroom focuses on the chemistry involved with each subject, along with proper sanitation and safety procedures. After completing the program, apprentices must pass the state test to be licensed as a practitioner

  • Entry requirements vary by employer. High school diploma or equivalent is recommended.
  • Applicants apply directly to a licensed, full service salon. The salon must be in business for at least one year.
